STRAINED
acrylic on canvas
11” W x 14” H
2026
“strained” explores the physical and psychological tension that can exist within the body. The figure is captured in a state of full extension, almost as though it is stretching beyond its own physical limits—or attempting to escape from itself. This tension becomes a visual representation of a feeling I believe many people can relate to, the discomfort of not feeling entirely at ease with where we are, how we exist, or how we present ourselves.
The figure is shown as extremely thin and frail, allowing the underlying structure of the body to become the focus. Muscles stretch across the body, bones emerge beneath the skin, and the ribcage is left exposed. Even the extended neck contributes to the sense of physical strain, creating an image that feels both vulnerable and uncomfortable.
The body becomes a reflection of an internal state. What begins as an emotional or psychological tension manifests itself physically, through posture, muscle, bone, and extension. “Strained” examines that relationship between our internal discomfort and the ways it can reveal itself externally.
