AFTER THE DOOR CLOSES

acrylic on canvas

11” W x 14” H

2026

“After THE DOOR CLOSES” captures the quiet, uncomfortable moment that follows transactional intimacy, when the “rush” has disappeared and you are left alone with yourself. The work explores the emotional shift from infatuation and impulsive desire to self doubt, regret, and a lingering sense of discomfort.

For many gay men, this feeling can exist within a familiar cycle: becoming consumed by the anticipation and validation of a connection, only to experience a stark emotional disconnect once the moment is over. What felt exciting only moments before can suddenly feel foreign, leaving you questioning your choices and wondering why you allowed yourself to become so consumed by the feeling.

The isolated figure embodies this moment after the door closes, when there is no longer another person to distract from the thoughts that follow. The distorted form and monochromatic treatment heighten the sense of vulnerability and unease, capturing not the encounter itself, but the emotional weight that remains after it ends.
