BABYDOLL
acrylic on canvas

“Babydoll” explores the delicate balance between masculinity and femininity within gay identity, and the unspoken expectations that come with navigating both. There is often a fine line between being masculine enough and being too feminine, with perceptions of what is desirable or acceptable shifting depending on who you ask.
The piece centERs around a strong, muscular male figure, somewhere between a moment of distress and a muscular flex. This contrast speaks to the duality of masculinity and femininity: the physical strength and confidence associated with the masculine, alongside the vulnerability and emotion often associated with the feminine.
Set against a vibrant hot pink background, the figure is placed in direct contrast with a colour traditionally associated with femininity. Babydoll also marks a personal milestone as an artist. It is my first painting to incorporate colour, allowing me to step into a new creative territory that feels both unfamiliar and instinctively natural. It is a new direction, but one that feels very much like my own.
