“Unknown” explores the relationship between the male body, objectification, and our fascination with what remains hidden. Depicting a strong, muscular male figure in a seated pose, the composition is interrupted by a white circle that conceals an intimate part of the body, one that is often central to the objectification of gay men.

While sharing in-progress images of this piece, I was particularly interested in the responses it received. Rather than commenting on the figure itself, many were quick to ask what was hidden beneath the circle. It made me reflect on our fascination with the unknown and how often our attention is drawn to what is concealed rather than what is already visible.

“Unknown” challenges the idea that revealing more necessarily makes something more compelling. Would the piece carry the same impact if everything were fully exposed? Perhaps it is what remains unseen that makes it so intriguing.
