ART?

mixed media on canvas

"ART?" is a mixed media piece that marks a shift in my practice. It is the first work where I intentionally stepped away from my monochromatic palette, introducing red as the only colour. Red became more than an accent—it represents intensity, emotion, vulnerability, and the way our attention is immediately drawn to what feels important.

The piece began simply: a single figure standing confidently at the centre of the canvas, his fist clenched. As I developed the body, it slowly transformed in my mind from a human figure into a sculpture. At that moment, I stopped seeing it as just a person and started seeing it as art.

That realization led me to reflect on our relationship with our own bodies. We experience them every day. We observe them, critique them, compare them, and constantly decide whether they are beautiful or flawed. Much like a work of art, our bodies are interpreted through a deeply subjective lens. What one person finds powerful, another may overlook. What one person considers imperfect, another may see as beautiful.

This piece asks a simple question with no definitive answer: What is art? Is it something that hangs on a gallery wall, or can it be the body we inhabit every day? By blurring the line between sculpture, figure, and self-perception, ART? invites viewers to question not only how they define art, but also how they define beauty within themselves.
